A New Approach to Success

A New Approach to Success

Because starting a whole new series wasn’t enough, today I’m bringing you a SECOND new series!

The inspiration for this new series came from reading a book called How to Become a Straight-A Student. I ordered this book early during my fall semester and kept putting off reading it, but I shouldn’t have. It only took me about two days to read it and it wasn’t as dry as I imagined it would be. This book inspired me to take a new approach this semester and share my journey with you!

This guide is based on developing time management skills, beating procrastination (can I get an Amen!?), taking better notes, and developing kick-ass study skills. The goal is to work smarter and to minimize the time you are working. If you want to ace your classes and still have a social life, then this is the plan for you.

I will be using the framework of the tips the author, Cal Newport, gives and adapt them to my own personal needs and style. If you take the new approach with me feel free to adapt my plan to your own ways. No plan is perfect for everyone because everyone is unique.

I will give you the framework of the plan in several posts (otherwise we’d be here all day) and then update you on my progress throughout the semester.

I don’t know if this plan with help me get straight-A’s, but that’s OK with me. Even though I did well my first semester, I know that if I don’t develop some strong time-management and study skills things will go downhill fast. If you feel the same way, take the challenge with me!

Check out the first part of the guide on Time Management.!

Priya + The Burden of Mental Illness

Heartbreaking Story of a Girl with Mental Illness

Yesterday I found out about a heartbreaking story. It is a story of a girl named Priya who suffered a terrible disease. A disease of mental illness. I know some people don’t believe mental illnesses are legitimate diseases, but they are. They cause so much pain and suffering that they cause many people, such as Priya, to take their own life. Priya had attempted suicide three other times throughout her life. She was sexually abused which worsened the state of her illness. Priya suffered very painfully for a long time.

Priya was very passionate about encouraging others and defeating the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. This sweet and caring girl set up a go fund me page before she took her life. She knew her parents would be left with her medical bills and her student loans and she knew she couldn’t pay them, but maybe others could. They surpassed the goal that Priya had set and her family is thankful. Her sister posted on the page that they extra money would go to a charity that Priya supported, but they have not chosen yet because she supported very many.

I have never met Priya. But I will speak up for Priya. I will speak up for every person dealing with the burden of a mental illness.

By His Grace Alone | Devotional #1

by his grace alone devotional

The Word:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:8-10 (NIV)

The Message:

Congratulations, you did it!

I have good news for you today. You get to enjoy the Kingdom of Heaven. You know how you accomplished such a feat? Let me give you a hint. It wasn’t by being patient with your significant other. It also wasn’t by always listening to you parents either.  And it definitely wasn’t by never sinning (you’re kidding yourself if you think that’s it. No it was none of those things. You know what’s even crazier? There was nothing you could do to accomplish this. No good works will get you into Heaven. It isn’t a ticket you can buy and it isn’t a test you can pass. You get to go to Heaven simply because God loves you. You get to be welcomed with open arms to His kingdom simply by His Grace alone. So relax. You don’t have to be perfect to get to Heaven. Which is good because you never will be perfect. Every human is a sinner and God knows that. If you have faith, if you believe in God and his works, then you will be received into the Kingdom of God.

Now does this mean that you can do whatever you want and purposely sin left and right, but not even care? Of course not. God’s grace is more of a form of insurance. He wants you to always do the right thing and live the life he wants for you, but because he knows you are imperfect he welcomes you anyway. It is his gift. His way of saying ‘you are not perfect, but I love you so you are saved.’ Beyond that though, we are called to live in a way that glorifies Him. We should want to live in the way we are supposed to say that we can show others His grace & love. We need to be the hands and feet of God. We need to tell other people about God, so that they to can have faith and be saved by his grace. We were created to do good works. That is our purpose. Go do good works. For the glory of God.

Reflection for today:

Thank God for loving you no matter what and welcoming you with open arms into His kingdom. Thank you for his unending grace. Think about ways you could live to show the glory of God to others.

The Gratitude Jar DIY

Gratitude Jar

One of my goals for this year is to think about what I’ve been blessed with. I want to appreciate and be grateful for all that I’ve been given. So I decided to do a jar similar to the Memories Jar that you see all over Pinterest and Tumblr this time of year. I’m doing a Gratitude Jar and I’m going to fill it with things I’m grateful for throughout the year.

You can do it too. Thanks to a printable from www.tinyme.com it is too easy.

I wanted to be a little craftier than I was, but unfortunately my funds are a little low right now, so I couldn’t afford a trip to the craft store (Hobby Lobby is too addicting). If you want to be a little more creative then me here are some variations:

  • Burlap: Glue the printable onto some burlap and wrap the burlap around the jar and glue (you would a hot glue gun for this) OR glue burlap ribbon on the top and bottom after gluing the printable on (again you’ll need a hot glue gun)

  • Chalkboard Style: Get some chalkboard paint and follow the instructions. After it dries you can write the month on it or anything else that inspires or motivates you. (And if you get tired of it you can just change it because it’s a chalkboard –hooray!) OR another option is buying chalkboard stickers – they are no mess & no stress!

  • Your Style: Be creative- the possibilities are endless! You could incorporate anything from twine & buttons to sequins & sparkles to the leaves from your front yard.
